History & lore
Diamond comes from the Greek adamas, "unconquerable." Diamonds were first mined in India more than 2,000 years ago. The tradition of diamond engagement rings dates to 1477, when Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave one to Mary of Burgundy. De Beers' 1947 slogan "A Diamond Is Forever" made them the standard.
Care
The hardest natural material, but it can chip if hit at an angle. Clean regularly because diamonds attract grease.
Value
The most expensive birthstone. Lab-grown diamonds are chemically identical and cost a fraction of the price, a popular option for birthstone jewelry. White topaz and white sapphire are budget alternatives.
